Program Director's Corner
A Message from the Program Director:
Our Family Medicine Residency program is where a dedication to education, patient care and research has made an impact on the health of West Texas and beyond for almost 40 years. It provides stellar academic training in an urban environment beyond borders – that is what we do.
Our program combines the immense resources of a primary care-friendly University Medical Center that is also El Paso’s county hospital, University Behavioral Hospital, Project VIDA Federally-Qualified Health Centers, Ambrosio Guillen Texas State Veteran’s Nursing Home, Texas Tech Community-Based clinics and a thriving Family Medicine Health Center in Northeast El Paso (FMC). The Residency program clinical practice is undergoing a redesign to become a recognized Patient-Centered Medical Home.
The nineteen Family Medicine research and clinical educator faculty in our department teach 24 residents and 2 Sports Medicine fellows at the FMC. Our relationship with other departments is excellent and collegial and our Family Medicine residents are valued throughout the hospital and community.
Our curriculum emphasizes the core attributes of Family Medicine's comprehensive care throughout the lifecycle in the context of relationships and culture and provides enough flexibility to receive additional training in areas of special interest. We have defined these areas as clinical-educational tracks in: Advanced OB, Community Medicine, Sports Medicine, and Research.
Our residents are a stellar group of individuals who consistently strive to provide the best possible care of their patients while supporting each other in having full and productive lives outside of their careers. Our call coverage system is designed by and for the residents.
Our program's graduates quickly establish themselves as successful practitioners from academic to solo practice in any location from rural to urban. You've got to check us out. The people and place are amazing!
