Department of Cell Biology and Biochemistry

A message from the Chairman, Dr. Vadivel Ganapathy:
Dr. Vadivel Ganapathy The Department of Cell Biology and Biochemistry participates in teaching biochemistry and cell biology to medical and graduate students. The research focus of the department includes programs in cancer, reproductive biology, diabetes, structural biology, development, and age-related neurodegenerative diseases. Mice and Drosophila are used as model systems in many of these programs. Clinical trials assessing the efficacy of drugs and drug combinations in cancer treatment are a part of the program in cancer. In addition to providing opportunities for the medical students to gain experience in biomedical research during summer, the department also offers Ph. D. and Master of Science degrees in Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics or Cell and Molecular Biology, and Master of Science in Pre-Medical Sciences.
We have 14 faculty members in the department with potential to serve as mentors for the students in these degree programs. We are also recruiting new faculty members with research programs that add strength to or complement the existing research programs. The graduate students get the opportunity to perform original and exciting cutting-edge research using the state-of-the-art equipment and techniques. We take particular pride in the individual attention and one-on-one training our faculty members provide for every student as they progress through each phase of their training. We work closely with the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in the recruitment, mentor assignment, assessment of research progress, and career development to the best benefit of our students. Our faculty members work diligently to support the students in classroom teaching, research projects, communication skills, preparation of manuscripts and fellowship applications, and exposure to grant writing. The department is an outstanding place for you to obtain the top-notch training in biomedical sciences.
