Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) offers several Faculty Development Seminars annually. These professional development opportunities cater to the learning needs of academic medicine professionals in all stages of their careers. By engaging a diverse cohort of leading speakers, subject matter experts, and instructors, the AAMC is able to provide cutting-edge content to keep members at the forefront of academic medicine.

Through seminars, workshops, certificate programs and online resources, the AAMC prepares faculty and staff at our member institutions to lead and transform today’s dynamic academic medical centers.     • Early Career Women Faculty Professional Development Seminar, July 15-18, 2017, Skamania Lodge, Stevenson, Washington
      • Designed for women physicians and scientists holding medical school faculty appointments at the assistant professor level, and considering leadership positions within their discipline, department, or institution, this comprehensive and engaging program provides an introduction to the knowledge and skills needed to pursue leadership roles within academic medicine.
  • Minority Faculty Career Development Seminar, September 7-10, 2017, Hyatt Regency Orlando, Orlando, Florida
      • Designed for junior faculty (senior clinical and research fellows, instructors, and assistant professors) and post docs (MD, D/PhDs and PhDs) who aspire to leadership positions in academic medicine, this 3-day seminar provides participants with real-world guidance and tools for pursuing career advancement in academic medicine, developing key professional competencies, building skills in grant writing and communications, and expanding their network of colleagues and role models. Bringing together junior faculty across the United States.
  • Mid-Career Minority Faculty Development Seminar, June 15-17, 2017, AAMC Learning Center/Marriott Marquis, Washington D.C.
    • Designed for individuals at the associate professor level who aspire to leadership positions in academic medicine, the seminar will address the specific needs of mid-career faculty from a culturally responsive approach offering skill building and strategies for pursuing career advancement in academic medicine, networking opportunities, executive coaching sessions, CV review for career development planning, as well as observational learning opportunities where participants will be matched with a senior faculty member outside of their institution.
  • Mid-Career Women Faculty Professional Development Seminar, December 2-5, 2017, The Westin Kierland Resort and Spa, Scottsdale, Arizona
    • Designed for women holding medical school appointments at the associate professor level, and holding leadership positions within their discipline, department or institution, the program goal is to enhance knowledge and skills needed to support progress along the path to leadership in academic medicine.
  • AAMC Annual Meeting - Learn Serve Lead, November 11-15, 2016, Seattle, WA
    • Open to all those who care about the future of academic medicine, this is the only meeting where our community converges to discuss and expand the future of medical schools and teaching hospitals. By bringing together our community from across campuses, across disciplines, and across missions, we can enable connections, deliver thought-provoking change, and provide leadership that will transform health care.
  • Organizational Leadership in Academic Medicine: An Executive Development Seminar for Associate Deans and Department Chairs, September, 2017, Location: TBA
    • Designed for new department chairs and associate deans to enhance your skills in people management, financial management, legal issues, and communications, and improve your ability to lead individuals or teams.

Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program

Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) is a core program of the Institute for Women's Health and Leadership at Drexel University College of Medicine, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Institute continues the legacy of advancing women in medicine that began in 1850 with the founding of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, the nation's first women's medical school and a predecessor of today's Drexel University College of Medicine.The ELAM program has been specially developed for senior women faculty at the associate or full professor level who demonstrate the greatest potential for assuming executive leadership positions at academic health centers within the next five years. Acceptance into ELAM is determined through an annual competitive selection process, in which approximately 54 candidates are chosen each year.

ELAM is the only in-depth national leadership program preparing women faculty for the highest administrative ranks at academic health centers.  Details and downloadable application materials can be found on the ELAM web site at

Online Professional Development Modules

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has supported the creation of four online professional development modules for educators across Texas that are now available 24/7 for faculty to access on demand.  These online professional development modules are now available free of charge at :

The modules consist of instruction examples, teaching tips, recommended readings, current pedagogical scholarship, active learning teaching strategies, and classroom activities and are designed to improve higher education instruction, particularly for new faculty and /or faculty teaching introductory level courses.
