A Little About Dallas/Fort Worth

With a population exceeding 1.2 million, Dallas is the ninth-largest city in the U.S. It is the symbolic center of what has become known as the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex (DFW), an area that encompasses 13 North Texas counties and more than 6.5 million people.

DFW, the nation’s fourth largest metropolitan area, has two major airports: DFW International, the world’s fourth busiest airport, and Dallas Love Field, the headquarters for Southwest Airlines. Those seeking public transportation can take advantage of the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) system, the ever-expanding network of light rail trains.

In addition to Southwest Airlines, many other Fortune 500 companies have a major presence in DFW, including Texas Instruments, Exxon Mobil, AT&T, Kimberley-Clark, J.C. Penney and AMR Corp., the corporate parent for American Airlines.

The DFW Metroplex also hosts some of the country’s top-rated attractions and is recognized as the Lone Star State’s number one recreation destination. In addition to the some of the best shopping, hotel and dining experiences in the American southwest, DFW boasts the largest urban art collection in the U.S. In addition, original copies of the Declaration of Independence and the First Folio of Mr. William Shakespeare’s Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies are housed at the Dallas Public Library.

For those with a passion for team sports, DFW is home to five professional sports franchises: the Dallas Cowboys (National Football League); the Texas Rangers (Major League Baseball); the Dallas Mavericks (National Basketball Association); the Dallas Stars (National Hockey League); and FC Dallas (Major League Soccer). The Metroplex is also flush with minor league sports teams and NCAA Division I college athletics.

A partial list of other notable DFW attractions is included below.
